Bhadrakali

The history of the Aryaveedu Bhagavathi Temple dates back to the origin of the Aryaveedu family. Aryaveedu Bhagavathi’s blessings bestowed wealth and prosperity to the family and the devotees. The temple is located near Puthiya Road, Palarivattom within Edapally South Village of Ernakulam district. In this temple daily poojas as well as special poojas and rituals on auspicious days are performed.

The Idol of the temple have been consecrated and installed by Puliyannur Tantri, Eroor. Administration of the temple is under the supervision and control of the Aryaveedu Bhagavathi Temple Trust.

According to the knowledge passed down from the ancestors, the temple was once owned and worshiped by an ancient Brahmin family. Later, this Brahmin family line came to an end and thus the temple came to the possession of the Aryaveedu family from Thirumuppathu, who had by then settled near Edappally – Palarivattom. Thus the temple became the abode of Dharmadeva of the Aryaveedu family.

Apart from this, the family members used to run Kalari and worshiped Kalari Bhadrakaali as Paradevatha. Over time, the family goddess Kalaribhadrakaali was invoked on Sreechakra and placed under the pedestal of the aforementioned idol of Bhagawathi, thus being worshiped by the family as Bhuvaneswari in the morning and Satvika Bhadrakaali in the evening.

According to the 1932 land documents, the temple was dedicated to the worship of Bhagawathi, Panchamurthi, Ganapathi, Hanuman, Guru Karanavars and the Nagas. During those days, Sankranthi Puja and Thrikala Puja were performed every month with special offerings such as Koottupayasam, Palpayasam and Pizhinju Payasam in the morning, and special offerings such as Guruthi, Appam, Ada, Vada and Kadala Payasam for the sattvic Bhadrakaali in the evening . Special poojas were also performed on Pathaamudayam in the month of May. On Prathishta day which falls on the Makayeeram Nakshathra in the month of March-April (Meenam), special poojas were performed and meals were offered to Brahmins.

In the year 1967-68, when the family was headed by Velayudhan Elayadom, who was a staunch devotee and a sattvik, Ashtamangala Prasnam was conducted under the leadership of Ishwaran Namboothiri and based on that, the temple was renovated and reinstated. Punaprathishta was done on Revathi Nakshathra in the month of October-November in 1967 (Thulaam, 1143) by Puliyannur Mana Narayanan Namboothiri.

Thirty years later, in the month of Nov- Dec, 1998 (Malayalam year 1174), Ashtamangala Prasnam was conducted under the leadership of Kalletukara Padmanabha Sharma and based on that, new shrine (Shreekovil) was built and dedicated along with the present Chuttambalam and Thidappally. Prathishta was done on Karkitaka Lagnam on 20th June, 1999(Malayalam year 1174).

Bhuvaneswari is enshrined in the Shreekovil, Ganapathi in the Nirruthi corner and Hanuman in the Vayu corner. In the left side of the chuttambalam, the Panch Moorthis viz Anthimahakalan (Shiva), Ayiliyakshi, Vellambhagavathi (Saraswati), Sasthavu and Durga are enshrined from south to north-east respectively. A bhajan hall was also constructed in front of this shrine. Kettunira, Vidyarambam etc are held in this bhajan hall.

Guru Karanavars are enshrined on a floor (Thara) in the south-west corner beside the shrine of the Panch Moorthis. In addition, on the west side, outside the main area of the temple, there is a Sarpakaavu dedicated to Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and other Nagas (snakes) associated with the family. The prathishtas of Sarpakaavu were consecrated and installed by the famous Amedamangalam Sreedharan Namboothiri.

The restoration and dedication of the temple as described above was made possible due to the enthusiasm and hard work of Muraleedharan Elayadom and by the cooperation among the family members. For a few days after the renovation, there were only monthly poojas and special poojas. Later, from 2003, Muraleedharan Elayadom took the initiative to start the Nithya Pooja (daily Pooja) as it is done today

After the untimely demise of Muraleedharan Elayadom, a trust was formed under the leadership of Karunakaran Elayadom for the management and running of the temple. The Aryaveedu Bhagawathi Temple Trust was established on December 21, 2005. The trust controls the temple, its properties and administration.

Due to the dislocation and the resultant fall of the idol and also due to several unwarranted incidents happened in the family, Ashtamangala Prasnam was again conducted as suggested by the Thanthri. As instructed in the Prasnam, on 24th March, 2011, the temple was architecturally (Thachu Shastra) inspected and the proposed changes were made. Remedial action suggested in the Prasnam was also undertaken. On 20th May 2013 (6th Idavam, 1188) Punaprathishta of the temple (reinstallation) was done on Uthram Nakshathra (10.20 am to 12 noon) under the auspices of Puliyannur Thanthri. The Sri Chakra, which was placed under the idol, was shifted to the base of the pedestal.

Based on the remedial action suggested in the Ashtamangala Prasnam, and as per the instruction of the Thanthri, on the basis of the ancient rituals followed, the system of Ukthavasara was established in the worship and offerings of the temple. Accordingly, rituals to be followed on daily basis, monthly basis and annual basis have been segregated, finalised and strictly followed till date.
